Cooper began his medical studies at St Thomas's Hospital. In 1800, he was appointed surgeon at Guy's Hospital and in 1813 he became professor of Comparative Anatomy at the Royal College of Surgeons. Cooper is remembered today for the method he developed of tying off arteries to treat aneurysms. Appointed surgeon to King George IV, he received a baronetcy in 1821.
