As a poet and historian, Daniel was widely recognised as one of the leading writers of his time. In 1603, he was appointed master of the Queen's revels, and produced a series of masques for Anne of Denmark. His book on the history of the civil wars between the royal houses of Lancaster and York was one of his greatest literary achievements.
