Crystallographer; from 1950 Franklin undertook systematic X-ray study of DNA fibres, producing crucial information used by Crick and Watson in building their DNA model; later she provided the first analytical demonstration of the model's accuracy. From 1953 she worked on virus structure, but died of cancer at the height of her success.
