Caps such as this 'mob' were generally worn indoors and were of fine lawn or cotton tied under the chin. Here, the educationalist Richmal Mangnall pairs it with a high necked ruffed dress in the style fashionable from 1810 to 1815. Its pale simplicity is the perfect foil for the necklace of popular red cornelian which she wears around her neck.
