The Edinburgh Volunteers, referred to as 'the Awkward Squad', were formed in 1794 to repress sedition, and were a political rather than a military body. In the early nineteenth century, with the country under threat of invasion from Napoleon, thousands of British volunteers were drilled every night. Colonel Crichton served as an army officer in America during the War of Independence, before returning to work in the family's coach-building firm.
