Largillière made several self-portraits in his lifetime. Some show him at work as an artist with his paints and an easel, while others, such as this example, depict him with his family, as if wealthy
landowners on their own grand estate. In this portrait the family is surrounded by luxury items including exotic fruit, sculptures and even a peacock.
