Mehta gained admission into the Grant Medical College and J.J. Hospital, Mumbai passing stringent written and practical examinations conducted by British IMS officers. He consistently topped his class, winning seven of eight prizes open for his batch. He was one of only two students to be granted a prestigious fellowship from the Tata Education Foundation which allowed him to pursue his Postgraduate studies in London where he lived from 1909-1915.
