Born in Leicester, Barnes worked as a lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary Supplement, after graduating from Oxford University. He was a literary editor and film critic before becoming a full-time novelist. Works include Flaubert's Parrot (1984), A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters (1989) and Talking it Over (1991). He has also published short stories such as Cross Channel (1996), translations and essays, and crime fiction under the pseudonym Dan Kavanagh.
