Writer and campaigner. Brophy's first novel Hackenfeller's Ape (1953) concerned the ethics of vivisection, against which Brophy campaigned vigorously in the 1960s. Her wide-ranging non-fiction included Fifty Works of English and American Literature We Could Do Without (1967), written with her husband Sir Michael Levey (Director of the National Gallery) and their friend Charles Osborne. Brophy was instrumental in the instigation of the PLR (Public Lending Right) in 1979, offering a payment to authors for the availability of their works in public libraries.
