Volinine was born in Moscow and trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School. In 1901 he joined the Bolshoi Ballet , where he rose to the rank of principal and danced all the leading roles. Admired for his classical technique and lightness, he danced with Diaghilev's company in the summer of 1910, appearing in Les Sylphides and the divertissement Le Festin.
