Joseph Nias entered the navy in 1807 and took part in battles against Napoleon in the Mediterranean until 1815. He continued in active service after the peace, and in January 1818 was appointed to an expedition to the Arctic under the command of Sir John Ross. He made a second trip to the Arctic in 1821, which lasted for two years.
