Jilly Cooper (b.1937) started her career as a journalist and wrote several works of non-fiction before her first romantic novel, Emily, was published in 1975. Best known for the six blockbuster novels, the Rutshire Chronicles, including Riders (1985), Rivals (1988) and Polo (1991), she was awarded the OBE for Services to Literature in 2004. She married the military publisher Leo Cooper in 1961 and they have written two non-fiction works together: On Rugby (1984) and On Cricket (1985).
