Politician and traveller. The eldest son of Henry George Percy, 7th Duke of Northumberland, Percy excelled as a student at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. In 1895 he became Conservative MP for South Kensington and first visited Turkey and other areas of the Near East that were to be the subject of his main personal and political interests.
