Born in Leamington, Frost left school at fourteen. He enlisted in 1939, joined the Commandos and was captured and imprisoned. A fellow prisoner-of-war, Adrian Heath, encouraged him to paint. He attended evening classes at Birmingham College of Art and St Ives School of Painting before going to Camberwell School of Art (1947-9).
