Kovacs worked by cutting straight into plaster to produce a model from which a bronze could be taken. He had completed a finished plaster study before Sir Edward Denison Ross left for Turkey in 1939 to take up a position at the British embassy in Istanbul. Kovacs later sold the Gallery both the plaster and a bronze cast, and then presented a related drawing.
