Jenkins represented Birmingham, Stechford for Labour (1950-76). As a backbencher he sponsored the Obscene Publications Act (1959). An enlightened Home Secretary, Jenkins oversaw reforms on abortion, race relations, theatre censorship, and homosexuality. As Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1967, his approach led to economic stability. He became Britain's first President of the European Community (1977-81).
