Youngest son of Robert, 2nd Earl of Leicester. Envoy to The Hague in 1679-1681 Sidney gained the confidence of William of Orange and was instrumental in preparing his arrival in England in 1688. After the accession of William III to the English throne Sidney was rewarded with offices and honours, including the posts of secretary of state (1690-1) and lord-lieutenant of Ireland (1692). He was created Earl of Romney in 1692 and died unmarried in 1704.
