Edward Herbert was born Edward Clive. He was the son of Edward Clive, 1st Earl of Powis and his wife Henrietta Antonia Herbert. In 1804, when his father inherited the earldom, he became Viscount Clive. In 1806, he became MP for Ludlow, retaining the seat until he himself became earl. In 1807 he took the surname and arms of Herbert, in accordance with the will of his mother's brother. Herbert played a leading role in the suppression of the Chartist riots of 1839.... more
