Organic cotton unisex t-shirt featuring Helen Brook.

Helen Knewstub, later Helen Brook, was born at her father’s art gallery in Chelsea. As a child, she would have been surrounded by the leading British artists of the day. After leaving school at the age of 17, Brook briefly worked for her father as his secretary and then married a violinist, George Whitaker, at the age of 20. Brook decided that women’s lack of sex education must be rectified. In 1952 she become a volunteer interviewer at a family planning clinic in Islington. In 1958, Brook became the director of the Marie Stopes Mothers’ Clinic, and in 1964 founded her own clinic – the Brook Advisory Centre for Young People. Her clinic aimed to give women the same sexual equality as men and decrease the number of unwanted pregnancies. In this she was successful and, by the time she died in 1997, a million young women had been advised by her clinics, which by then totalled nineteen across the country.
