Jones was a Mississauga Ojibway, the third-largest group of Native Americans. At the age of fourteen, he was ordained as a Methodist minister. In 1838, he presented a petition to Queen Victoria from chiefs of the Mississauga Ojibway community asking for title deeds to their lands.
