Stanley Lees Giffard trained in the law and was called to the Bar in 1811, although his practice was not particularly successful. He began his journalistic career as a political writer on the St James's Chronicle, in 1819 becoming the journal's editor. In 1827 Charles Baldwin launched the Standard and appointed Giffard as the first editor, a post in which he remained for thirty years.
