Ordained in 1676, he was unable to secure a preferment until the Duke of York succeeded to the throne as James II in 1685. That year he was made Bishop of Bristol. Although loyal to James, Trelawny was opposed to the King's policy of religious tolerance to Catholics and in 1688 he was one of the seven bishops who signed a petition to him asking him to reconsider his Declaration of Indulgence and was sent to the Tower.
