Trained by his uncles Samuel Wyatt and James Wyatt, who were both leading architects, he quickly became pre-eminent as an improver of existing properties. Indeed, only about one-fifth of his commissions were for completely new buildings, with the majority being for additions, alterations, or for estate and garden buildings.
