Pharmacologist. Black studied medicine at the University of St Andrews. He worked in industry and academia throughout his career: working for ICI Pharmaceuticals; Smith, Kline and French; the Wellcome Foundation and holding professorships at University College London and King's College London. Black developed two important drugs: propranolol, now known as a beta-blocker, and cimetidine, for the treatment of ulcers. Black received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1988.
