Ross was an officer in the Royal Artillery, trained at the Woolwich Academy, who commanded the 'Chestnut' troop of guns during the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. A trained military professional rather than a gilded youth, he rose steadily through the ranks to become a field marshal and lieutenant-governor of the Chelsea Hospital.
