The birth of Leopold was the first at which Victoria used chloroform, thus sanctioning the use of anaesthesia recently developed by James Young Simpson. Leopold inherited the disease of haemophilia from his mother and spent most of his childhood as a semi-invalid. He also suffered from epilepsy, an illness that affected the course of his life.
