Somerset joined the British Army in 1793. He rose swiftly, and by 1801 he had attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and was placed in command of the 4th Light Dragoons. His regiment joined the Peninsular War in Portugal in 1809. Somerset commanded them in various battles and was promoted to Colonel the following year.
