Public servant; often remembered as 'the Red Duchess', in 1923 she became the first woman member from Scotland elected to the House of Commons. As a self-proclaimed crusader against international cruelty, she visited Spain and became actively involved in the care of Republican refugees. Her open criticism of the Conservative government's toleration of Franco cost her her position as party whip.
