Churchman and scholar. Bishop of Worcester (1577), and Archbishop of Canterbury (1588-1604). Rigorously enforced Elizabeth I's policy of religious uniformity, and was attacked in tracts under the pseudonym 'Martin Mar-Prelate'. Drew up the Lambeth Articles, adopting a Calvinist position on predestination and election.
