John Kentish came from a wealthy family of landowners. He studied divinity at Daventry Academy before becoming, in 1790, the first minister of a newly formed Unitarian congregation in Plymouth. In 1795 he moved to London as afternoon preacher at the Gravel Pit, Hackney, and in 1803 he was appointed minister of the New Meeting in Birmingham.
