John Hall was a pupil, first of engraver William Wynne Ryland, and then of the French immigrant engraver Simon François Ravenet. In 1756 and 1761, he won prizes from the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Hall became a fellow of the Society of Artists in 1765 and was three times elected director, in 1768, 1769 and 1771.
