A descendant of Captain Bligh of the Bounty, Jasmine Bligh was the first woman announcer when the BBC began its regular television service on 2 November 1936. She was also chosen to re-open programmes when wartime restrictions on broadcasting were lifted after the war. Her lines were learnt (in the days before autocues) and for announcements after 6pm she wore an evening dress. In the 1950s she took part in programmes for deaf children and in the 1970s worked on Thames Television's Good Afternoon.
