A pioneering advocate of sex education and family planning and the author of the best-selling books Married Love and Wise Parenthood (1918), which brought the question of family planning into the public arena. She opened several birth control clinics in England. In addition, Stopes had a successful career as a paleobotanist, studying fossil plants and published papers on the composition of coal. The artist Sir Gerald Kelly greatly admired Stopes, describing her as the 'most remarkable woman, whose fame will outlive so many'.
