Jesuit, classical teacher and poet; influenced by Christina Rossetti and close friend of Robert Bridges, become one of the most original poets of his time; while his most ambitious works such The Wreck of the Deutschland at first caused bewilderment, he is now widely appreciated for such poems as The Windhover and Pied Beauty in which he sought passionate celebration of man and nature and a sacramental view of creation.
