Jules Grévy's term as President (1879-87) confirmed the establishment of the Third Republic (1870-1940) in France. Grévy became an advocate in 1837 and was elected to the Constituent Assembly in 1848. After the fall of the Empire, he was chosen as President of the Assembly in 1871, and occupied this position until 1873.
