Edward Hodges Baily was a sculptor and designer. He was the son of a ship's carver and began his career as a modeller of small wax busts. Baily spent seven years in John Flaxman's studio before studying at the Royal Academy schools, where he won the first silver medal of the Society of Artists and was awarded gold and silver medals by the Royal Academy in 1809 and 1811.
