Wynfield studied at Leigh's art school in the 1850s and had his first painting accepted at the Royal Academy in 1859. The paintings that he produced in the 1860s were often set in medieval or Renaissance times and dealt with the tragic consequences of love. He was the founder of the group of artists known as the St. John's Wood Clique. In the mid 1860s Wynfield produced a number of distinctive bust portraits of artists in fancy dress.
