Born in Burslem Staffordshire, Bennett moved to London in 1889 where he wrote articles and short stories. Starting as assistant editor of the weekly journal Woman in 1893, he became editor three years later but soon resigned to concentrate on his writing. Anna of the Five Towns (1901) and The Grand Babylon Hotel (1902) were followed by Whom God hath Joined (1906) The Old Wives Tale (1908) and the Clayhanger trilogy (first volume in 1910). They established Bennett as a major exponent of realist fiction.... more
