Declaring herself 'still an absolute school girl', Brazil began to write professionally when she was thirty-six. The Fortunes of Phillipa (1906) was inspired by her time at boarding school in Manchester. Brazil wrote nearly fifty school novels, characterised by use of schoolgirl slang, fervent friendships, respect for authority and devotion to games, particularly hockey, thereby establishing an influential sub-genre of children's writing.
