Poet and journalist. Born in Cork, he studied at Trinity College, Dublin, before coming to London in 1823, where he wrote extensively for the periodical press. He became founding editor of Fraser's Magazine, 1830. Thackeray used him as the model for Charley Shandon in Pendennis. Maginn had a reputation for bohemianism, and ended his life in desperate circumstances, spending two periods in debtor's prison.
