Conway and Onslow Ford knew each other well but the circumstances around the creation of this image are not known. This example, perhaps unique, was given by Conway to his friend and colleague at the Imperial War Museum, Charles Ffoulkes, and by him given to the National Portrait Gallery in 1925, although it was not formally accession until later.
