This group of carte-de-visite photograph shows each of Queen Victoria's children. The carte-de-visite was patented by the French photographer Andre Disderi, and the name derives from the photograph's small size, which resembled a 'visiting card'. This selection includes portraits by the American photographer John Jabez Mayall, who produced the first publically available portraits of the royal family in 1860. Collecting these small portraits of the royal family became a fashionable pastime.
