A Scottish divine and philanthropist. He studied for the Church, and became a minister in Edinburgh in 1827. Guthrie became one of the most popular preachers of his day in Scotland, and was associated with many forms of philanthropy, especially temperance and Ragged Schools. These were charitable schools dedicated to the free education of destitute children; Guthrie was instrumental in their spread throughout the United Kingdom.
