Compton was ordained as a deacon in 1850 and became a priest the following year. He served as curate at Horsham until in 1852 his brother, the Marquess of Northampton, appointed him to the rectory of Castle Ashby. He remained in this post until being made archdeacon of Oakham in 1875. Four years later, he was made dean of Worcester and in 1886 he became Bishop of Ely, a position he held until 1905.
