The son of an eminent violinist, he studied music in Germany at the Royal Academy before he established himself as a violinist in Edinburgh. In 1879, Mackenzie left Edinburgh for Florence, where he concentrated on composing. He wrote several operas and choral works, including the cantata The Bride, the cantata Jason, the opera Colomba and the oratorio The Rose of Sharon.
