The first editor of The English Illustrated Magazine, founded and edited the journal Art and Letters, and wrote on art and drama for many other journals. He wrote many books and monographs about art, particularly championing the Pre-Raphaelites. He was co-director of the Grosvenor Gallery, set up to promote the work of Pre-Raphaelite artists.
