Joseph Durham was apprenticed to the sculptor John Francis and later worked under E.H. Baily. Between 1835 and 1878 he exhibited 128 works at the Royal Academy, and was elected an Associate of the RA in 1868. His most important commission was the Memorial to the Great Exhibition of 1851, which consists of a fountain surmounted by a bronze statue of Prince Albert and four figures representing the corners of the world.
