by James Kerr-Lawson
According to the artist's wife, this drawing by her husband, James Kerr-Lawson, shows herself, Maurice Hewlett and his wife Hilda, drying themselves in the blackened kitchen of an inn at San Quirico, after a wild stormy drive in the Apennines. 'The landlord overwhelmed us with hospitality, preparing a banquet, brought his best wine & drank it with us - a magnificent fellow. He told J. K-L. [James Kerr-Lawson] he would not have let us in if he hadn't liked the look of us!'
