Herbert Plumer is generally regarded as one of the finest army commanders serving in France during the First World War. He joined the Army in 1876, serving in Sudan and South Africa before becoming quartermaster general of the new Army Council. On the outbreak of war in 1914, he was placed in command of the 5th corps, part of the 2nd Army stationed at Ypres. He commanded the 2nd Army from 1915 until the end of the war.
