This memorial medal appears to be based on William Theed's monument to Hallam in St Paul's Cathedral, commissioned by the the Hallam Memorial Committee and completed in 1862. Examples of the medal were presented by the Committee to the British Museum and the Society of Antiquaries in 1863, probably soon after it had been struck. Joanna B. Horner, donor of the Gallery's specimen, was daughter to Leonard Horner, a member of the Memorial Committee.
